Murukku

My mother-in-law is with us and she has been getting bored with nothing major to do. Even before leaving from Chennai, she had decided that she would make papad and murukku. She wanted to start work the 2nd week after getting here. we stopped her from doing so...but a few days back, when all the snacks from India got over, my husband asked her if she could make some murukku. And so here it is...my mother-in-law's murukku recipe.

Murukku Maker
Ingredients
Rice flour                             - 2 cups
Urad (black gram) flour       - 1/2 cup
Roasted Bengal gram           - 2 heaped tbsps
Sesame seeds                        - 1 handful
Cumin seeds                         - 1/2 handful
Butter                                    - 1/2 stick (approx 50 gms)
Salt to taste
Water to make dough

Method

In a wide mouthed pan, take 2 cups of rice flour. In a pan, roast urad dal till you get an aroma and the dal turns slightly brown. Powder it and keep aside. Switch off the stove and in the same pan add the Bengal gram and roast for a few minutes. Powder and keep aside. Sieve the urad flour and powdered Bengal gram and add to the rice flour.

Wash the sesame seeds and add to flour mixture. Add cumin seeds, salt and butter. Add water little by little and make a soft dough. Make sure it is not too sticky, else it will be difficult to make the murukku.
In a pan, heat oil for frying the murukku. Once the oil is hot, fill the murukku maker with the dough and get making. Fry till the murukku is golden brown.
Remove and let it cool on a tissue paper. Store in an air-tight container and enjoy this crunchy snack anytime!
The murukku maker is available in most Indian grocery stores in the US.

  1. I love murukku. Back home in India, I had some Keralite neghbours who used to send it to us on every diwali....everyone in my family would fight over it. Thanks for stopping by my blog....glad to follow yours.
